Board & Train
What is a board and train program?
Your dog lives and trains with a professional trainer for one or two weeks, learning commands every day — then comes home, and we teach you everything at a turnover session.
What does my dog learn in the 2-week board and train?
Seven commands trained to hold: Sit with duration, Place and extended Place, Heeling on and off leash, Down with duration, Down from a distance, Off, and full off-leash Recall — plus greeting, door, and meal manners.
What does the 1-week board and train cover?
The foundation set: Place and extended Place, Heel, Off, extended Sit, and the "Break" release command — e-collar included, with an in-depth turnover session.
Where does my dog stay?
With a Pro Trainer — living, training, and going on real-world outings around mid-level distractions: parks, trails, ballgames, big-box stores, and neighborhoods.
What is the turnover session?
A 2-hour one-on-one at the end of the program where we walk you through everything your dog learned and exactly how to handle them.
What is the lifetime refresher?
The 2-week board & train includes a free refresher for life — if commands get rusty, we tune them back up. Terms on the guarantees page.
Is the e-collar included?
Yes — both board and train programs include it, and the turnover session teaches you to use it properly.
Will my dog forget me after two weeks?
No — dogs don't work that way. Your dog comes home excited to see you, with far better manners than when it left.
Board and train or weekly lessons — which is better for us?
Board and train fits busy households that want the heavy lifting done by a professional; lessons fit families who want to learn alongside their dog. Take the quiz or call and we'll recommend honestly.
Obedience & Methods
What commands does basic obedience teach?
Come, Sit and extended Sit, Down and extended Down, Place and extended Place, Out, loose-leash walking, and Off — across four private one-hour lessons.
What does "extended" mean?
Your dog holds the position until released with "Break" — not for three seconds, but for as long as you decide. Duration is what turns a trick into a command.
What is marker training?
A distinct signal — a word or click — delivered the instant your dog performs the right behavior, followed by reward. That precision is the heart of our Basic Marker Mastery program ($475).
What training methods do you use?
Clear communication, structure, and the tools appropriate to each dog — including e-collar conditioning introduced properly and humanely. Everything is demonstrated on your dog, in front of you.
Are e-collars cruel?
Not used correctly. Modern e-collars are communication tools with adjustable levels — most work happens at levels many humans can barely feel. We teach you exactly how to use one.
Do you use treats?
We use what works for each dog. The goal is obedience that holds when there's no cheese in your pocket — around distractions, at distance, off-leash.
Can old dogs learn new commands?
Yes — all dogs, all ages, all issues. Seniors often settle into structure faster than adolescents.
Do you train small breeds?
Every size — commands scale; standards don't.
Will my dog listen to my whole family?
Yes — lessons and turnover sessions include your household, so everyone uses the same commands the same way.
What happens if we don't keep up the training?
Commands fade without use, like any skill. The maintenance is minutes a day of consistent handling — and we set you up with exactly what to do.
Puppies
When should puppy training start?
Foundation work starts the day your puppy comes home — that's what the $100 consultation covers. Formal obedience begins around 5 months.
What does the puppy consultation include?
One hour with your family, your puppy, and a trainer: crate training, potty training, socialization, establishing a routine, and stopping nipping and biting.
How do I stop my puppy from biting hands and ankles?
Redirection, consequence, and routine — a core consultation topic, with most families seeing change within days.
How do I crate train my puppy?
Gradually, positively, and on a schedule — the consultation walks you through the exact routine, including ending the overnight crying.
Is there an online puppy option?
Yes — the Ultimate Puppy Course ($199): the full puppy curriculum in on-demand video.
What's the right age for board and train?
Once your dog is past the young-puppy stage — around 5 months and up. Before that, the consultation and foundations carry you.
Which comes first — Marker Mastery or Basic Obedience?
Either works; Marker Mastery ($475) builds the communication system and is a lovely bridge from puppyhood into formal obedience.
Aggression & Behavior
Can an aggressive dog really be trained?
Yes — aggression and reactivity usually trace to missing obedience and uncontrolled exposure. Our 8-lesson package builds the foundation first, then works structured desensitization around other dogs.
My dog lunges and barks at other dogs on walks. Which program?
That's leash reactivity — exactly what the Dog Aggression Package ($1,000) is built for.
Do you turn away aggressive dogs?
No — dogs other trainers turn away are a specialty. All dogs, all ages, all issues.
What about resource guarding?
Guarding responds to the same structure-first approach: obedience gives you interrupt-and-redirect control, then we work the trigger scenarios. Mention it when you book.
Can training fix separation anxiety?
Structure helps enormously — crate conditioning, Place, and predictable routines lower the anxiety baseline. Tell us the specifics on your free call.
Is my dog too far gone?
We hear that weekly — then we meet the dog. Call (910) 622-7987 and describe what's happening; the consultation is free and honest.
Will my reactive dog be around other dogs during training?
Eventually yes — that's the desensitization phase — but only in structured, controlled scenarios after the foundation is in place.
Therapy Dogs & AKC CGC
How do I make my dog a therapy dog?
Train to the standard, then pass certification. Our Therapy Dog Development course ($950) starts with an honest evaluation and prepares you both.
What's the difference between a therapy dog and a service dog?
A therapy dog volunteers comfort to many people where invited; a service dog performs tasks for one disabled handler with broad legal access. Our program prepares therapy dogs.
Who certifies therapy dogs after the course?
Upon successful completion we can evaluate and certify you and your dog through Therapy Pets Unlimited.
What is the AKC Canine Good Citizen test?
The AKC's 10-skill test of good manners — one of the most recognized dog credentials in America. Our CGC program ($600) trains all 10 skills and includes certification.
Is CGC worth it?
It's the recognized first step toward therapy work, welcomed by many landlords, and a lifetime AKC title — for $600 including certification.
Can mixed breeds earn the CGC?
Yes — the AKC CGC program is open to all dogs, purebred and mixed.
Is CGC required before therapy certification?
Not required, but it's a natural stepping stone — many teams earn CGC first, then continue into therapy development.
Local Life & Beaches
Can my dog become reliable off-leash at the beach?
That's our signature result — off-leash Recall proofed against birds, waves, and crowds. The 2-week board & train is the fastest route.
What areas do you serve?
All of New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties — Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, Leland, Southport, Hampstead, Surf City and more. See service areas.
Do you cover Topsail Island?
We serve Surf City and Topsail Beach; North Topsail Beach on the Onslow County side is covered by our sister location in Jacksonville, NC.
Can my dog learn patio manners for downtown?
Yes — extended Place is the patio command: your dog settles on a mat through the whole meal, released only by you.
Do you train dogs to behave on boats?
Duration Place and Sit translate directly to decks and docks — tell us your setup and we'll build it into lessons.
Do you help dogs new to coastal life?
Constantly — new-to-Wilmington dogs meeting sand, waves, and crowds for the first time settle fastest with structured obedience underneath them.
